Burmese Charter Refugee Relief International's efforts in recent years have been focused on the struggle of the Karen (pronounced ``Kuh-REN") people who have been expelled from their homeland by the Burmese military dictatorship and live in refugee camps along the Burmese/Thai border. Refugee Relief International's charter to operate in this region comes from the following appeal from the exiled Karen government (Note: ``SLORC" refers to the Burmese regime's State Law and Order Restoration Committee.): APPEAL TO THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA We, the Karen of Burma, urgently appeal to citizens and supporters of the struggle for democracy in Burma to assist us at this critical time. As all supporters of our struggle must know, all means of communication are strictly controlled by the illegal military regime of SLORC. In this way the democratic forces are restricted in their ability to distribute human rights information to the outside world, as well as in provision of news and educational material in their own ethnic languages. The Supreme Headquarters of the Karen National Union (KNU) has authorised me as Chairman of Mergui-Tavoy District to make this urgent international appeal for assistance. Kwe Htoo Win Chairman; Mergui Tavoy District Kawthoolei 6th October 1996
